Synopsis

A rice store owner delivers community news in his function as the head of town (¡®dong¡¯ in Korean).¡¯ An electric shop owner keeps tending his store at the entrance of now-vanished Sungok Market. A barber is in his quiet shop but he used to be so busy being the barber of his neighborhood before the town was redeveloped. A stationery store owner befriends school children and gets to smile once in a while when grownups come back to his shop and reminisce their school days. Over two decades, many things have changed in the lives of these small shop owners. They are well aware that the changes have eventually taken away the need for their business and that the places that have witnessed their hard work are disappearing one by one.

Director's Statement

In old days, neighbors used to meet at the local market, children used to gather around and play along the alleys, and small old shops were everywhere. These are what gradually vanish as times change. I wanted to focus on the small old shops and leave a visual record of them. The decades-old stores have the traces and memories of the people who have worked hard there and these people will go on living those places. I hope to show how our neighbors still live in the kind of space that is vanishing today.
